While shopping at a number Christmas only shops in 2012 my wife and I noticed a lot more "unique" 3D (ish) advent calendars. All decent looking but...as with many things these days...they lost uniqueness when we saw the same design over and over again. Mass produced does not = Unique. That's when my wife had a great suggestion...why not make a custom one for us and make it unique. That's how the 3D Christmas "Advent Trucking" Calendar came to be. The finished sample did what all my samples aim to do...an order! A client contacted me requesting a custom Christmas Advent Calendar that looked like a vintage gas pump. While working on this projects designs were also developed for more Advent Calendars for a variety of holidays and special events. Watch for those in future posts. I included LED lighting inside the gas pump with a trigger switch so when the calendar was opened not only do you enjoy a yummy treat but also a red, yellow and orange light show. Click on the photo to see more images. One of the extra 3D Advent Calendar designs that did get finished was the "24 Days 'til Christmas" 3D Chocolate Bar Calendar. This one is a great sample to show to potential clients and store owners that may want to offer themed 3D Calendars in their stores. If you have a store that could sell custom themed 3D Advent Calendars please drop me a note and let's see what we can develop for your business...the possibilities and fun are endless. One such project was a 3D Team Headquarters Sign to be presented to the head coaches of TriStars Training, Carolyn and Bob Gebbie. It was presented to them by my client at the annual Christmas party and I'm told they were very impressed by the sign and even more moved by the gesture by my client. TriStars Training Ltd. is a Victoria, British Columbia, swim, bike and run coaching company established in 2004. Material: Duna 15lb CoraFoam HDU board Primer: Coastal Enterpirses FSC-88 WB Paints: Modern Masters Metallics Today I'm going to tell you about a very special friend of mine and my wife's...Mike the Dog. We rescued Mike in 2008 when he was left homeless at the age of 10. Though we knew we wouldn't have him as long as a younger dog we fell in love with him and his story so much that we knew we had to adopt him and give him the best life possible. <<< After all...how can anyone say no to this face? We gave Mike an amazing 5 years and he gave us the equivalent of 1000 years of laughs and love. When taking Mike for a walk we often heard; "He looks like a Disney dog!" or "What an adorable puppy" followed by "No! He can't be that old!" When we had to say good-bye to Mike in May of this year it was incredibly hard but necessary. Janine and I discussed how to remember Mike and decided to buy a small Japanese Maple tree and I would make a custom 3D memorial planter for it until we found a permanent home for it in our garden. It took a little longer than expected to make but it was truly a labour of love. Mike was a great dog and he is incredibly missed. Below is a slide show of the finished 18" x 18" x 18" planter. It's been a little longer than expected since my last journal update on the fish sign challenge. Been busy working on some other projects at the same time as working on the fish...so here we go. I've done a lot of modeling and cutting and clean-up. Soon I will start in on the assembly, sculpting and on to primer and painting. Slide 1 shows the base of my sign/display which will total approx. 3" thick. Still some cleaning up to be done and smaller gears to add but it's looking pretty mechanical and marine-ish. Slide 2 shows a series of gears which will be used to replace the fins of the fish. (a sneak-peek of the eye can also be seen at the top) Slide 3 shows the mechanical ribs. Slide 4 is one of two port-hole framed magnifying glasses that will be used to "study" the mechanica fish. Stay tooned for more developments with the mechanical fish. Next update will be focused on another project I've been working on...a memorial pet planter.
